Italian is written mostly phonetically, making it fairly easy to know how to pronounce an Italian word that you see written.
Most words are accented on the second-to-last syllable. Some words are accented on the final syllable, and an accent mark is written in that case.
However, some words are accented on the third-to-last or fourth-to-last syllable, and no accent mark is written.
You will get to know those words by listening to language CD's or tapes, or an instructor, and with practice.
Although there is a booklet included with this course, you don't need it, because the course starts with simple things and
goes on to more advanced Italian.
